Some tips for making your game look good

Post by CarnivorousA on Mon Oct 19, 2009 5:12 am

It's them little things that make so much difference...

What makes a game look good is having it fullscreen but not stretched, leaving a border that blanks the rest of the screen, so your game is the centre of attention. This is easy to do, go to the game options under the 'graphics' tab, tick 'start in fullscreen' and 'Fixed scale' with the % set at 100.

Games look pretty tacky if they have a tacky preloader, which is the very first impression. You don't want people to think "what a crappy loader, the rest of the game's probably this quality" so this can help. If you're doing what I said above, make the preloader look almost the same as what the title screen, without the options or interactive stuff and 'loading...' or something written above where the bar will be. This works better when you're using the game in windowed mode with no border.

Make sure your sprites are themed. If you're going to have pixel sprites, make sure they all are, so you won't have some professionally made sprite in a comic environment. Unless the story is something like "Real man went to comic land somehow".

Make the game run really smoothly, raise all the rooms' fps to 60 and half everything. Half image speed, movement speed, alarm times, etc. This looks way better next to a 30fps game.

Another thing, which is what I'm going to do. If you have lite and you know someone with pro, get them to make your game a .exe so the "made with game maker" doesn't come up.

When making you game 60 fps wouldn't you have to double alarm times.

I agree with pretty much everything. Also make sure you make decent looking icons if you think that someone will download your game or if its download only. An ugly icon is equivelent to an ugly loading screen. It also gives your game individuality if thrown into a folder full of other GM games.

Game options, loading tab, big button down the bottom that says 'change icon' note that you can't change gifs and stuff into icons by renaming it with .ico

32x32 icon images. You can either make them yourself or I saw that Carnivorous has a thread where he will make them for you.
