What makes a good game - Platformers.

Somebody probably already has thought of this already, but anyway......
So what makes a good platformer, Proper meaning less hardcore types like metalslug Twisted Evil or adventure games like Metroid Fusion.

good physics, where the platforms arent blocks there hills with jagged edges.

The rooms are large, like a free-roam game, but levels.

unique graphics

A DEEEEEP VERY DEEP story line, thats most important though.

A good story, physics, attacking(if there is any) and HAS to be a fun, creative game. and thats some of what you need

An interesting environment with many things to explore, but it is not neccesary to explore them. That way people can take their time and explore everything or they can just breeze through it. Also an intersting main character. People often just give a little blob and put him as your character. You have to make people like and connect with your character. Good graphics and effects are good, but decent graphics will pass. Variety in the game is also very important. This can be added by making many different enemies, puzzles, and powerups. In other words mix the game up so that it doesn't get bland. Good level design is also very important. Controls are more important than many think, make sure they are not frustrating. I do not think that an amazing, epic story is neccesary. Just as long as their is a storyline that flows throughout the whole game. Another good thing to have is collectibles like secret coins and stuff. That way people will go back to try to find all of these collectables. Most importantly of all it HAS to have fun gameplay and be creative. All of these things are good to have in a good platformer game.

When you say interesting enviro ment,does this include those highly detailed areas that the player will only notice for like a split-second and then move on?

No, i meant an environment that keeps the player interested. It does not have to be super detailed, but the tileset that is used should be good looking. Also some detail is good as it keeps the player interested in what tiny thing he/she will see next. I also sort of meant the setting and the world that the game is set in.

You mean like the tilesets they use in the 16-bit sonic games?

Yeah that true. And yeah like in a Sonic game or a Mario game. Since pieces from the tileset are used often in the game they need to look good in order to be graphically apealing.

but have to match the graphical theme, unless ur going 4 the 3dish effect on everything but 2 characters.

Well I really don't understand what you are asking Sparx. The fact that they are used throughout the level WOULD be a reason to make it good looking.

I'd like it if ,for once, you could actually play as the boss characters in a game, I don't mean the small, weak, 1st level bosses either, I mean the massive screen filling ones.
To me that would be the mother if all unlockables!

What I mean is, whenyou play a sonic game and the "enviroment" is sometimes the same in some areas.
They basically recycle different backgroud tiles to be used throughout the a level.
